Monkey Island: Awesome Edition.

When I was just a boy (and not a trans-gendered prostitute), The Secret of Monkey Island made its way into our household through my mother. I saw her played the fun little adventure game and immediately wanted in, but at the tender age of a gradeschooler, I couldn’t figure out much about it on my own. My mother never beat it, and it wasn’t until I reinstalled it at the age of 12 that I got to experience the end of it.

Needless to say for all you nostalgiafags out there, it’s awesome. It’s hard to argue with 20-year-old opinions too, even though 2001: A Space Odyssey really does suck, and no, it’s not because I don’t get it. It’s because it’s boring. More on that at 11.

Last year I got to take advantage of my friend’s credit card, when I heard about “The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition”. Now, anything with the word “remake in the description sounds like a bad idea, but while Psycho’s frame-by-frame remake was abysmally bad even for fans, gaming is a different story altogether. Needless to say, I was initially skeptical until I did some much-needed research on the re-release.

The entire game was remade with handpainted artwork, an orchestra-recorded score and voiceovers done by the voices of the 3rd and 4th games in the Monkey Island series. Frame-by-frame remake. So let me sum this up, it’s the same game, except it now works on Windows 7, looks phenomenally gorgeous, sounds beautiful, and most importantly.. is in HD?

ANDANDAND you can switch back to the original version from in the game, just by hitting F10, anytime you want. Stuck, because you don’t remember how to beat it? F10, BAYBEE! It’s definitely a fanboy’s dream to this game, so anyone unfamiliar with it won’t enjoy this very much since they won’t really know what they’re doing, but I can gaurantee that if you were a fan of The Secret of Monkey Island, this will make you jizz, in your pants.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Monkey Island. The humour just hit the right spot with me. Unfortunately I never got to play the sequels (but I hear LeChuck’s Revenge will be getting the same treatment). I need to get this. I really, really do.

I was lucky enough to pick MI up when I was a kid as part of a LucasArts set. It came with other fantastic games (all using the same menu style gameplay etc) and a lot of them had the same humour about them.

There was Maniac Mansion (awesome), Zack McCrackin and the Alien Mindbenders (completely out there, but it even teaches you geography, lol), Loom (cast spells with music? Yes please), and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (who doesn’t love indy?). All these games I would recommend if you loved MI. Particularly Loom.

    GROG!
