These websites aren’t necessarily my favourites, but they represent the sites that can eat up an entire day pretty damn quick.
Want to know who played the crack-head who eventually befriends Ice-T in the flick “New Jack City” (psst, it’s Chris Rock)? Back in the old days you would have had to rent the movie and squint at the final credits screen in a vain attempt to decipher the tiny writing, even with a slow crawl it was the hardest thing anyone ever had to do (that includes you thermonuclear physics, you bastard!). Imdb.com changed all of this by providing a giant database with detailed information on movies and television shows (it also has cool stuff like trivia, mistakes, and DVD releases). If you wanted to know who the weapons co-ordinator was on “Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV” this (very important) information is right at your fingertips…it was Rick Washburn by the way.
Have you heard some wacky urban legend, like Mikey from the Life cereal commercials died after ingesting a lethal cocktail of Pop Rocks and Coke, and wondered if such a ridiculous rumour was true? If so, Snopes.com is the website tailor made for your kind of obsessive search for the truth. This website tackles urban legends from movies to politics and everything in between, trying to prove or disprove some truly sensational (sometimes banal) stories, some of which I will admit are better left unsolved.
I will admit, I am a user of Facebook (don’t forget to become a fan of Nerd Nexus on Facebook…shameless plug, I know) but I am always blown away at the kind of insanely personal things people post on their pages. I hate to break it to you, no one really cares about how big your dump was, or how your girlfriend is a huge bitch or even how you’ve narrowed down the list of “possible baby daddies” to just 17 dudes (fine, I’m sure those 17 cats have a little sweat on their brow, they may care). The point is some things should probably be left private, and not paraded around on the world-wide-web, for all to see. Lamebook.com takes all of the very worse from Facebook allowing you to judge the train-wreck that is someone else’s life while simultaneously allowing you to feel even the slightest bit better about your own pathetic existence.
If you’ve ever giggled like a delighted school girl after seeing an 85 year old geriatric slip and fall on a patch of ice (admit it, we’ve all enjoyed seeing the odd “pension plummet”), then fail blog is the website for you. Fail Blog quite simply shows pictures and videos of people and things failing (there is an occasional “win” now and then but mostly its huge failures). Did you do something embarrassingly stupid at work? Don’t fret, just cruise over to fail blog and witness some clod trying to throw a chair through a window at Burger King, only to have his efforts thwarted by a slippery floor (I think we all know the results…possible spinal cord injury). Like Lamebook this website derives its enjoyment through finding pleasure in the idiocy of others.
A website started by the mysterious “Eklund”, hockeybuzz is a place where wild trade rumours roam free and petty douche-satchels hurl insults at anyone who isn’t fanatical about their favourite hockey team. Sure, the rumours are mostly ludicrous and like everywhere else on the net, the vile scum that inhabit this website (I count myself as part of this scum) would rather insult you than get into a meaningful conversation about hockey, but that’s the fun of it. As a Habs fan I love when the Leafs lose, and I relish in going to the site to taunt and boo Toronto fans until my throat (fingers?) is sore.
Honourable mentions: bloodyelbow.com, sherdog.com, mentalfloss.com, gorillamask.net, somethingawful.com, tsn.ca, listeverse.com, cracked.com, textsfromlastnight.com, Wikipedia.org
Well I’ve told you what websites I waste an inordinate amount of time at, let me know what sites eat up your day in the comments section…also continue to waste your time at Nerd Nexus, we really need the money.
