Very few things in the movie industry are more powerful than an amazingly well done trailer (even more powerful than you Oprah you jerk!). When done correctly, a movie trailer will compel you to get your economy sized behind off of your poor (now structurally unsound) couch and into a theatre where you are surrounded by mouth breathers, seats that smell of farts (possibly covered in love stains) loud pop corn chompers and the occasional phone conversation gone awry (it’s amazing what people will spend 10 dollars to do). Great trailers have the ability to will you into these sticky floored death traps through pure force of awesomeness, curiousity or a combination of both I like to call curiawesomety. Here are a few of my favourites
Goodfellas
Possibly my favourite movie ever, this trailer has the perfect combination of impeccable voiceover and music selection(a hallmark of Scorsese). The use of the instrumental portion of “Layla” (like in the film itself) is badass.
The Warriors
This cult classic (I know it seems cliché to call something that, but in this case it’s an apt usage of the term) much like the movie, keeps the trailer simple basically laying out the plot using quick cut action, a creepy synth score and an announcer with a gritty, guttural delivery that truly makes this trailer a very visceral experience. Every time I see it I get pumped to watch the movie. CAN YOU DIG IT?!?!
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The voiceover, the shot selection and the now famous score give this trailer the feeling of a sweeping epic this film truly deserves. An incredible way to open up one of the greatest trilogies of all time (Indiana Jones and the Close encounters of the third kind doesn’t count…that’s what it was called wasn’t it?).
Comedian
Deftly skewers everything that makes a mediocre trailer stale and boring. Simply put…funny.
Alien
One of the creepiest trailers of all time, confusing imagery combined with an eerie soundtrack and quick cuts leaves the viewer disoriented but (in my case at least) intrigued. All of this is capped off by quite possibly the greatest tag line ever given to a film.
Bonus:
On the Waterfront
