I think part of the failure of the prequels was that.. they're all backstory. Lucas claims that it was originally all planned as 6 movies.. no, it was planned as 3, but he looked at all the material and didn't see a way to do it. What he had left over was some backstory with no details, so he made up the details as he went along, without any reasoning as to what happened why.
