Command & Conquer is one of the most well known series’ in RTS. With the introduction of full-motion video sequences to immerse you in their gameplay and one of the most riveting villains on video game history, as well as a wonderfully memorable alternate reality, making the Soviets cool again, this series has really given us a lot over the years. Westwood had to shut their old doors in 2003 when the tyrants at EA got ahold of them. After the phenomenal release known as “Red Alert 2″, none of the C&C releases have quite been the same.
Command & Conquer 3 slipped onto the shelves a couple of years ago and was heralded as “not a failure”. Nobody expected EA to pull of anything even remotely decent, but they managed an enjoyable game, even if it brought nothing new except the mighty Joe Kucan (Kane) in HD. It was beautiful, it was kind of fun. It did the job. Red Alert 3 promptly followed and was also a moderate success, even if taken quite a bit less seriously than the previous title in its’ sub-series. Red Alert was always a bit of a joke, but I don’t recall it ever getting cornier than Peter Stormare’s “timachine”.
Well, today, Joe Kucan in HD returns with Command & Conquer 4, said to be the last in the “tiberium” saga, regarding Kane’s seeming invulnerability and plans for tiberium. EA is going out of their way to try to market this one to everyone. They know full well that C&C3 or RA3 didn’t really pick up any new fans, they were fan service, this one is for everyone else. It’s prettier, it’s different, they’ve taken a page from many other RTS books… and from the sounds of it, it’s not going to be much of a Command & Conquer game, but we’ll see how it holds up against the titanic of StarCraft 2′s release, later this year (we hope).
Now excuse me, it’s torrent time.
